Students in both of Belgrade’s universities decided to stage a peaceful gathering in front of the Serbian state TV (RTS) on Friday evening to draw attention to what they feel is the public broadcasters inadequate reporting.

The plenaries of the Belgrade Arts University and Belgrade University said they welcome students and the general public at the gathering at 6:30 pm, adding that they are distancing themselves from all political parties and politics.

A statement recalled that they staged a protest in front of the RTS headquarters a month earlier for the same reason. “Air time for the student protests continues to be in seconds,” it said and added that the RTS report on the road block at the Mostar intersection was less than a minute. “That is in violation of the public broadcaster’s principles of objective, timely and comprehensive reporting, so much so that the public is deprived of information,” it said.

According to the statement, the RTS not only fails to report but compared actors to terrorists on January 14 “creating an even greater divide in the public”.

“We are fighting for a society free of violence and oppose this kind of reporting which is impermissible for a public broadcaster. The RTS has continuously endangered every citizen with the media darkness,” the statement said, recalling the RTS moto – Your Right to Know Everything.
