The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia strongly condemns the action of the conservative movement “Naši,” which posted threatening messages against N1 television in Aranđelovac. The posters depict the N1 logo with an Ustaša cap, accompanied by the message: “Ustaše from N1, you are not welcome in Aranđelovac!” This act brutally targets the media outlet, sending a clear message of hostility and intolerance. Such messages are not only hate speech but also a direct call for violence and a threat to journalists’ safety.
We are particularly concerned as our colleagues from N1 will be reporting from Aranđelovac tomorrow, and this hostile atmosphere further increases the risks to their security. Open targeting of journalists can have serious consequences, and the state has an obligation to ensure their protection and guarantee that they can carry out their work safely.
This is not an isolated incident but part of a broader campaign of intimidation and pressure on independent media in Serbia, who continuously face attacks and attempts at discreditation. We remind the public that in the past month alone, IJAS has recorded 25 different attacks, threats, and pressures against journalists and media workers. Every attack on journalists is simultaneously an attack on the public’s right to accurate and timely information.
We call on the relevant institutions to act urgently and take measures to protect those who report professionally and in the public interest.
