A Serbian fake news tracker said on Tuesday that most of the misinformation about the student protests came from three pro-regime tabloids.

The FakeNews Tragac portal said that the Alo, Informer and Vecernje Novosti dailies published more than half of the total of 1,386 manipulative stories about the students and their protests. According to the tracker, those 3 tabloids published 739 manipulative fake news stories between January 24 and March 3 – Alo 282, Informer 268 and Vecernje Novosti 189.

After March 3, those pro-regime tabloids published more than 700 fake news items on their portals. The manipulative stories included claims of a Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) flag at a protest and claims of lice in several colleges.

“In 869 cases, the media created the fake news and in 373 cases the manipulation was in statements by politicians and in 144 cases the fake news came from public figures,” the portal said and called the public to spread the word about manipulation and misinformation.
