A group of 135 pro-government journalists in Serbia has announced the formation of a new association, the “Association of Journalists of Serbia” (ANS), as according to the existing Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS).
Signatories work at strongly pro-government outlets such as Informer, Alo, Kurir, Srpski Telegraf, Novosti, and TV stations Pink, Prva, B92, Happy, and Euronews Serbia, among others. Even a senior RTS editor is included.
UNS noted that many of these media figures have a history of targeting independent journalists and openly support the ruling Serbian Progressive Party and President Aleksandar Vučić.
Despite this, ANS claims its mission is the “uncompromising protection of all journalists” against increasing pressures on press freedom — without specifying who is exerting such pressure.
Journalist Antonela Riha commented:
“Maybe it’s not such a bad thing. Like in the 1990s, we need to clearly take a side. They’ve declared theirs — now there’s no way for them to say ‘I didn’t know’”.
