Veteran journalist Antonela Riha withdrew her candidacy for Serbia’s electronic media regulatory body (REM), citing a completely unlawful and compromised selection process.
Riha noted that many candidates do not meet basic criteria, including having no experience in electronic media. She criticized absurd nominations — such as the “Association of Traditional Crafts” proposing candidates under the category of children’s rights protection.
“This process is so flawed that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs — and the witch — could all get in,” said Riha, describing it as a farce.
She called on the EU to intervene, as REM’s reform is part of Cluster 3 in Serbia’s EU accession negotiations and linked to unlocking financial aid.
So far, 16 candidates nominated by 78 organizations have withdrawn, citing gross legal violations.
