European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) President Maja Sever expressed concern over the unexplained dismissals of key people in United Group.
United Group said that its founder Advisory Board Chairman Dragan Solak and CEO Viktoriya Boklag were stepping down and gave no explanation for the decision.
“The red alert turned on immediately,” Sever told Radio Free Europe (RFE) commenting an appeal by United Media editors. She added that the EFJ knows the importance of N1 in the region, “primarily in Serbia where, if things take a turn for the worse, we could say that the lights have turned off completely”.
Sever said the EFJ has no intention of delving into ownership relations. “The most important thing for us is to find out what changes in that media outlet mean for the public and its journalists,” she said.
RFE said United Group did not respond to a request for a comment.
