Serbia’s two major journalists’ organizations staged a protest in front of the state TV in support of a producer who is facing disciplinary proceedings over a child’s words in support of student protesters in her show.

The RTS management board said it would file charges with the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) over the show for violations of the rules to protect the rights of minors.

The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) and the Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) joined the RTS journalists’ Our Protest initiative to support producer Jelena Popadic Sumic. She produces the RTS Children’s Program.

A young boy on the Important Things show was recorded having his hair cut and speaking to the barber about the breaks in school, the student blockades and protests. The boy was asked about the blockades and said that “the students are fighting for justice, for our future”. That video clip has been shared went viral on social media. Popadic Sumic said that she followed all the rules and never instructed any of the children on what they should say.

Popadic Sumic, who was lent support by all the RTS unions, did not speak at the protest, choosing to release a baloon with thank you written on it.
