The Serbian Parliament’s Culture and Information Committee adopted a list of candidates and nominators for membership in the country’s electronic media regulator.
The Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) has been in limbo for months because the term in office for its Council expired and a new one has not been adopted. Nominations were made by empowered organizations and the government but the process has been stalled for months with some nominees wanting to resign but not being able to do so for procedural reasons.
The 14-member committee voted 10 in favor, 2 opposed, one abstention and one member did not vote to adopt the list, committee Chair Nevena Djuric said after the meeting. The committee also discussed objections to the list and ministry opinions with ruling coalition and opposition MPs expressing completely opposite views.
The new process to name a new REM Council started following a student blockade of the state TV (RTS) headquarters in April with the authorities annulling the previous process and parliament initiated a new procedure.
