Belgrade daily Danas and its Danas.rs portal are joining the initiative launched by N1 and Nova TV station to find investors to buy media outlets from United Group.
“The goal is to find investors who would acquire our media outlets from United Group under market conditions, in order to preserve our independent editorial policy and allow us to continue working according to the principles of the journalistic profession and in the public interest,” a statement said.
“Considering that the calls made by the editors-in-chief and program directors of our media to the new management of United Group—to publicly clarify the future of the N1, Danas, Radar, and Nova newsrooms—have so far received no clear response, we believe that, in the interest of both our journalists and our readers, we should seek out potential investors who would safeguard the independence and freedom of these media outlets, and ensure that we can continue to do our work freely.
“We would like to remind readers that Danas has been published as an independent daily for 28 years, remaining steadfast in its distinctive editorial policy based on the principles of freedom of opinion and adherence to the journalistic code of ethics, while our portal ranks among the most-read in Serbia.
“Our intention is to continue Danas’s long-standing tradition and, together with our colleagues, remain a light in the media darkness and the Serbian media jungle— a goal that can only be achieved through a long-term solution ensuring the survival of our newsroom, which has endured many hardships and bans throughout its history, yet has never allowed anyone to extinguish or restrain its spirit of freedom.
