Reporters Without Borders (RSF) official Pavol Szalai said that investing in N1 TV and news portal would help independent journalism.
“Investment into N1 is an economic support for free and independent journalism,” he said in a comment for N1 about possible investments in the station and its portal to make sure it continues to have an independent editorial policy. The initiative to find investors to buy United Media outlets (N1 and Nova TV, Danas daily newspaper, Radar weekly magazine and their respective portals) was launched by the media outlets in an effort to preserve their editorial independence which is under threat. The imminent threat to their independence was revealed in a recording of a phone conversation between United Group CEO Stan Miller and his counterpart at the state-controlled Telekom Serbia Vladimir Lucic in which they discussed the dismissal of UG-owned United Media CEO Aleksandra Subotic as requested by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
“As the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa says, without media freedom, there are no facts, no truth and no trust. And these are necessary for both democracy and healthy economic environment. So, an investment into N1 is also an investment into a democratic and prosperous society,” Szalai added.
