European Greens: We support N1’s efforts to safeguard its independence

Co-chair of the European Green Party Vula Tsetsi said she is deeply alarmed by the systemic attempts of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and state-owned actors to interfere in Serbia’s independent media landscape, describing this as part of Vucic’s wider effort to silence critical voices.

Tsetsi emphasized that she supports the efforts of the journalists and editors of N1 and other media outlets to safeguard their independence through a proposed management buyout.

She said these efforts represent “a powerful stand for media freedom and a signal that democracy in the Western Balkans will not bow to intimidation. At a moment when political and corporate pressure is intensifying, their commitment to professional integrity has our full respect,” Tsetsi said.

The Co-chair of the European Green Party recalled that the European Parliament’s Joint Motion for a Resolution on Serbia, adopted on 21 October 2025, made it clear that media freedom and pluralism are under systematic attack and must be urgently guaranteed by the Serbian authorities.

“Those who stand up for democracy, free media and the right to truthful reporting in Serbia will always have our full support. We call on both national authorities and international actors to ensure that N1 and all independent outlets can operate free from intimidation and political influence,” Tsetsi said.
