The Parliamentary Committee for Culture and Information adopted a new list of candidates for REM Council members on the proposal of the Council of National Minorities

Sreten Jovanović and Ištvan Bodžoni are candidates for member Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM), proposed by national councils of national minorities, was decided on Saturday (December 13) by the Serbian Parliament’s Committee for Culture and Information.

At the request of that parliamentary body, the committee was provided with additional documentation on work experience in the field for candidate Sreten Jovanović.

The Board did not adopt the objection of the Citizen Initiatives submitted on the grounds of, as stated, illegality in the procedure for selecting candidates on the proposal of the National Councils of National Minorities.

The Committee of the Serbian Parliament for Culture and Information previously did not adopt the list of candidates for the ninth member from among national minorities on December 5, as it was requested to submit additional documentation for Sreten Jovanović within seven days.

The Saga Around the REM Council

More than a year since the end of the mandate of the previous convocation, on November 12, 2025. a new one was elected, but the truncated REM Council.

The ruling coalition then refused to vote for the Bosniak and Albanian National Council candidates Muhedin Fijuljanin and Ljumturija Ametija, so instead of nine members, eight were elected – four independent and the same number of government candidates.

Two days later, elected REM Council members Rodoljub Šabić, Ira Prodanov Krajišnik, Mileva Malešić and Dubravka Valić Nedeljković announced on Friday (November 14) that they will resign from those positions, because they do not agree to be elected in a process that puts politics above the law.

The four of them announced on Saturday (December 13) that they will officially submit their resignations on Friday at 12 o’clock if the Serbian Parliament does not repeat the vote by then and make a choice between the two legally established candidates of the Council of National Minorities.

They addressed a public letter to the Committee for Culture and Information of the National Assembly of Serbia, regarding the decision at today’s session to reject the objection which, as they stated, would enable the legal and legitimate conclusion of the elections in the ninth area – the area of the proposers from among the national councils – and thus the election of the remaining member who will ensure the legal condition of independence of the REM Council, reports FoNet.

Lawyer Rodoljub Šabić said earlier for “Vreme” that the four candidates who offered their resignations will also submit them if the process is not completed according to the law.

“As for the independent candidates, the position is clear and unchanged: either they will choose one of the two previous candidates in the re-voting or they will receive our announced resignations,” Sabić told “Vreme”.
