Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic urged the country’s ambassadors to do everything in their power to help Serbia advance on its European path, but cautioned that there are limits to what the country will tolerate.
“The line must be drawn at humiliation,” Vucic told the Ambassadorial Conference at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade.
He described the talks with the European Union (EU) on the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) as humiliating, and said that Serbia agreed to “absurdities” and was forced to listen to “insane and senseless arguments.”
Vucic told the Conference that Serbia remains on its European path, noting that Belgrade had expected major steps forward from the new American administration, but that it has not received support from any of the great powers.
In early November, members of the Serbian Parliament elected eight out of nine members for the new term of the REM Council.
However, MPs failed to elect either of the two candidates proposed by national minority councils after the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, which is part of the ruling coalition, objected, claiming that the proposed candidates do not reflect the true will of those councils.
The Serbian Parliament Culture and Information Committee subsequently confirmed that the new national minority council candidates meet all legal requirements for REM Council membership.
On Friday, four of the newly elected REM Council members officially resigned because the vote for the candidate nominated by national minority councils was not repeated.
The four independent candidates announced in mid-November that they would resign, saying they refuse to be part of a selection process that “places politics above the law.”
