Dean of the Faculty of Political Science Maja Kovacevic assessed that the government’s clear intention is to prevent N1 and Nova from broadcasting.

United Group announced it is introducing a new corporate governance system for its news programs, which, she points out, confirms its commitment to preserving editorial independence and protecting journalistic freedoms. The reorganization resulted in the establishment of a new company, Adria News Network (ANN), which unites all news media outlets in the region.

In mid-2025, investigative journalists released an audio recording in which Stan Miller and Vladimir Lucic discuss the dismissal of Aleksandra Subotic, the desire to make the media at UM small and to implement the interests of President Aleksandar Vucic.

Commenting on these reforms, but also the president’s statement that he hopes these changes will lead to more polite criticism and that “citizens will be able to swallow this criticism more easily”, Kovacevic pointed out that this is the regime’s intention to make the work of N1 and Nova more difficult.

“I think that from the beginning the regime’s desire was to prevent N1 and Nova from broadcasting the kind of programming you were broadcasting. We have also seen in personal appearances at press conferences that there is a harsh reaction to questions asked by journalists from these TV stations, animosity is visible, but that cannot exist in a democratic society. The intention is obvious and I think that it is clear to everyone in the EU what is happening. These issues are important for the EU and it is important for the EU not to sacrifice democratization in Serbia,” she said.
