The National Convention on the European Union expresses deep concern over the dismissal of the long-serving director of N1 television, Igor Božić, which represents a serious blow to the editorial policy and credibility of this media outlet. The consistent and professional editorial policy of N1, diligently implemented by Božić, enabled the citizens of Serbia to access objective information and critical reporting, in line with the standards of independent journalism.
Interference by owners and pressure from the highest state officials on editorial policy not only violate fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression and the right to information, but also move Serbia away from the European Union’s criteria necessary for progress in the process of European integration.
We call on United Group and the competent institutions to respect media independence, ensure the protection of journalists, and preserve public trust in free and professional media, which is a key prerequisite for democracy and Serbia’s European path.
