In its report on the Serbian media landscape in March 2026, the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) highlighted the reporting on the death of a female student, whose body was found in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, attacks on journalists during local elections, protests at the University of Belgrade Rectorate, and a ruling party rally.
A press release accompanying the report said that the death of the young woman whose body was found in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade revealed the ethical standing of journalists when it comes to the right to respect and the right to privacy.
“Once again, media outlets – which can only formally be called such – demonstrated how little they respect human dignity, regardless of whether they report on the living or the deceased,” the report reads.
It adds that journalistic associations, the Press Council, and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance called on those reporting on the tragic event not to forget their professional responsibility, to exercise restraint, and to respect the right to dignity and the right to privacy.
The report points out that election day in 10 municipalities and cities was marked by severe attacks on media workers, including brutal beatings, the obstruction of reporting, and the seizure and destruction of equipment.
The Association added that journalists at the Rectorate protest were attacked by police and unidentified individuals, while at the ruling party rally, journalists were obstructed from doing their jobs, intimidated, insulted, and threatened with the destruction of their equipment.
ANEM also drew attention to a post by the Center for Social Stability targeting the Chairman of the ANEM Board, Veran Matic, noting that a criminal complaint has been filed for endangering Matic’s safety.
The report further highlighted that journalists also received threats online.
