European Parliament Rapporteur Tonino Picula MEP warned of anti-EU propaganda on pro-regime media in Serbia.

“At the session of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS), which was attended by Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, I warned about the continuous anti-EU propaganda in pro-government media in Serbia and the pressures on the remaining independent media in Serbia and Montenegro through changes in ownership structures that could threaten their editorial independence,” he wrote in an X post.

He added that Kos announced stronger fact-checking support, a new EDMO center for the Western Balkans, stronger protection of media freedoms, the fight against cyber threats, and the building of social resilience, especially among young people.

“I emphasized that it is unacceptable for a candidate country to simultaneously claim that membership in the European Union is a strategic goal, while tolerating or encouraging anti-European rhetoric. European values mean free and fair elections, independent media, strong democratic institutions, and the rule of law. This is exactly what we expect from all states that wish to become members of the European Union,” he added.
