IJAS: Threats made by Zoran Cirjakovic must be stopped

The Independent Journalists Association of Serbia strongly condemns the brutal threats made to journalists Jovana Gligorijevic and Snezana Congradin, as well as to historian Dubravka Stojanovic and literary critic Jelena Lalatovic.

The threats were sent from the account „Autosovinizam voc ponistenog Dzendera Vukadinovica“ on Twitter, behind which, we justifiably doubt, stands Zoran Cirjakovic. In addition to the threats he occasionally makes, the person behind this Twitter account continues to persecute journalists in this way, especially Jovana Gligorijevic.

In two tweets during the evening of October 20, the author wrote that “it is difficult for him to imagine that there is a man who, no matter how disgusting and miserable he may be, would like to rape Jovana Gligorijevic”, and only a few minutes before that he wrote that “for Jovana Gligorijevic, Snezana Congradin, Dubravka Stojanovic and Jelena Lalatovic he wants all the worst except rape and acid in the face. ”

This is not the first time that threats have been sent from the same account. Almost a year ago, a threat was sent to journalist Vesna Malisic from that account, according to which an indirect call for murder was made. Also, as a reminder, in July 2019, Jovana Gligorijevic, Snezana Congradin, Isidora Petrovic, Dubravka Stojanovic, Adriana Zaharijevic and Jelena Lalatovic sent an open letter to the public in which they clearly and precisely pointed out the continuous terror carried out against them by Cirjakovic.

IJAS warns that hate speech and calls for lynching should never be an integral part of the usual communication between people who think differently. Because, the fact that the suspect may never have participated in any violent event does not mean that all people who read his posts look at the things he wrote only as part of some controversy.

We also call upon the police and the prosecution to find and prosecute the person behind this Twitter account  as soon as possible.

IJAS will inform the competent authorities about this case, enter them in the Database of attacks and pressures on journalists and inform international organizations about it.
