The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) strongly condemns the new death threats directed at the authors of the podcast Dobar, loš, zao (“The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”), Marko Vidojković and Nenad Kulačin, and calls on the competent authorities to urgently identify and prosecute the person responsible.
The threats were posted in the comments under an Instagram post published by the news portal Nova.rs, featuring an excerpt from an episode in which the Executive Director of the Institute for European Affairs, Naim Leo Beširi, appeared as a guest. In addition to Vidojković and Kulačin, Beširi was also subjected to disturbing and threatening comments.
The threats against Vidojković and Kulačin, as well as hate speech of a chauvinistic nature, were posted by a user operating the Instagram account lesicslobodan.
Among the comments were: “These scumbags, these two pieces of shit should be killed, they should go f** their mother,”* as well as: “And this little Šiptar will pay his dues.”
After the case was reported to the competent authorities and the public was informed, the same user posted another threat directed at the two authors, writing:
“Kill the bastards, f** their satanic mother. Traitors and Ustashas, die, you scum.”*
It is particularly alarming that this is not an isolated incident. According to available information, the same Instagram account has directed multiple threats at journalists over the past several months. Despite this, the attacks have continued, further demonstrating the urgent need for the competent authorities to act swiftly and prevent further threats to the safety of media professionals.
The lack of a timely and effective institutional response creates an atmosphere of impunity and encourages perpetrators to continue intimidating journalists because of their professional work.
We call on the police and the competent public prosecutor’s office to immediately identify the person behind the Instagram account lesicslobodan, investigate all previously reported threats sent from that account to journalists, and take all measures prescribed by law to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
