The long-running and popular documentary series Kvadratura Kruga is moving from the Serbian state TV (RTS) to N1 after more than 20 years on the public broadcaster.
Kvadratura Kruga (The Squaring of the Circle) is one of Serbia’s longest-running documentary program, known for its intimate portraits of ordinary people, forgotten communities and individuals whose lives reflect broader social issues. Created and hosted by journalist Branko Stanković, the RTS program has told stories of resilience, tradition, hardship and human dignity since its launch in 2002. It has received more than 60 domestic and international awards, including the Milan Pantic award for courageous and professional journalism.
“The concept of ‘Kvadratura kruga’ remains essentially the same. A human being is at the centre, as the measure of everything, above all else, with an emphasis on people who resist the unreasonable voice of the majority — from ordinary people who create through honest work, to creative individuals who have left a mark beyond their surroundings, and innovators and creators whose actions can serve as an example to others and help improve this country,” Stankovic said. “In these dehumanised times, ‘Kvadratura kruga’ will nurture universal humanity, but also the good in people which, only through constant promotion, can overcome the evil that appears more powerful and organised. The slogan of ‘Kvadratura kruga’ is: ‘We are all people, we should be human.'” he said and added that the show will continue telling stories about people and places, with the belief that geography shapes mentality and, to some extent, the character of communities.
“The stories from Kvadratura Kruga should be a document of the time we live in, but also a picture of life in that time,” he said.
N1 News Director Branislav Sovljanski said he invited Stankovic to join N1 after learning that his cooperation with the RTS had ended.
“It was incomprehensible to me that a program with that reputation could disappear from the TV screen. I am glad that Stankovic accepted the offer for to continue the journey on N1,” Sovljanski said.
He added that Stankovic brings decades of experience, professionalism and dedication to N1, after producing more than 2,000 stories during his career.
“We will try to give him the energy to continue exactly where he stopped,” Sovljanski said.
