The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) calls on the competent prosecutor’s office to urgently investigate all the circumstances surrounding the threat sent to journalist and writer Marko Vidojković via Instagram, identify the person responsible and determine whether the message constitutes the criminal offence of endangering safety.
On 10 September, a person using an Instagram profile under the name Zoran Kosorić sent Vidojković the following message: “Just keep barking, you dog – you’ll end up in a manhole.” We consider this a serious threat against the journalist’s life and physical safety, requiring a swift and effective response from the authorities.
A criminal complaint has been filed with the Special Prosecutor’s Office for High-Tech Crime.
We recall that, since 2019, prosecutor’s offices have opened more than 25 cases concerning threats against Marko Vidojković and his colleague Nenad Kulačin, with whom he hosts the podcast “Dobar, loš, zao”. Convictions have been handed down in only three of these cases.
Such a small number of cases ending in final convictions sends the message that serious threats against journalists can be made with almost no consequences for those responsible. Lengthy proceedings and the absence of appropriate sanctions further embolden perpetrators and deepen the sense of insecurity among journalists and other media workers.
IJAS expects the competent prosecutor’s office, with the support of the police, to take all necessary steps without delay, establish the identity of the person who made the threat and inform the public about the outcome of the proceedings. The authorities must demonstrate that threats against journalists will not be tolerated and that every such case will be thoroughly investigated and appropriately sanctioned.
