The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the death threat and offensive, misogynistic and nationalist messages sent to N1 journalist Nina Kljenjak and calls on the Croatian authorities to urgently identify and prosecute the person responsible.
On 11 September 2026, Kljenjak received a postcard at the N1 newsroom containing a direct threat to her safety. The message stated, among other things: “Your END is coming soon. Everyone at N1 TV will pay a heavy price, especially your leader TIHIRAT,” apparently referring to her former editor-in-chief, Tihomir Ladišić, through a derogatory play on his first name. The message also contained a series of degrading, misogynistic and ethnically charged insults directed at Kljenjak and threats against her colleagues at N1.
The SafeJournalists Network calls on the competent Croatian authorities to investigate the case without delay, identify the sender and take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Nina Kljenjak and her colleagues at N1. Threats against journalists must be treated with the seriousness they require and those responsible must be held accountable.
Gender-based attacks and misogynistic threats against women journalists are a serious form of intimidation aimed at silencing their work and should be treated with particular seriousness by the authorities. Threats against journalists create a climate of fear that undermines media freedom and the public’s right to be informed
The SafeJournalists Network expresses its full solidarity with Nina Kljenjak and the N1 newsroom and will inform relevant national and international stakeholders about this case. Every attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, public interest and fundamental human rights.
