A group of media and civil society organizations called the state-owned Telekom Serbia to stop the pro-regime Informer, Kurir and other TV stations from terrestrial broadcasting their programming.

The 16 media, journalists’ and civil society organizations want Telekom Srbija to immediately stop those stations from national terrestrial broadcasting because they do not have the necessary licenses.

The organizations said Informer and Kurir have licenses for distribution through cable, satellite and IPTV networks, but not for national terrestrial broadcasting. They accused Telekom Srbija of effectively giving the two channels national reach and assuming powers that belong to Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) , which is responsible for allocating the limited public resource of radio frequencies and terrestrial network capacity.

They also called the REM Council to take all necessary measures to restore legality in terrestrial broadcasting and initiate appropriate legal proceedings against those responsible. They said the issue was particularly problematic ahead of parliamentary elections, warning that the two stations gained free nationwide access while their coverage of the government and the Student List was highly unbalanced.
