It has been 19 years since the attempted murder of journalist Dejan Anastasijević, when two bombs were placed under the window of his apartment on the night of April 13-14, 2007, one of which exploded. Although there were numerous reactions, the case has not yet received a judicial epilogue.
Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) announced that it has been 19 years since the attempted murder of a journalist Dejan Anastasijevic, which happened on the night between April 13 and 14, 2007, when two bombs were placed under the window of his room where he was sleeping with his wife. One exploded and damaged the other, while shrapnel scattered around the apartment, but luckily missed the target.
The statement reminds that on the night between April 13 and 14, 2007, two bombs were placed under the window of the apartment where Anastasijevic was sleeping with his wife, one of which exploded. Shrapnel scattered around the apartment, but the journalist and his wife were not hit.
ANEM states that the attack was followed by numerous condemnations and promises that the case would be thoroughly investigated, but that concrete results were not achieved. As it is pointed out, despite public reactions and political announcements, the investigation did not lead to the discovery of the orderers and executors.
The announcement also reminds that Anastasijevic pointed out possible motives for the attack during his career, as well as the context of threats and pressures that investigative journalists were exposed to during that period.
After the attack, Anastasijevic lived for a time under police protection and worked as a correspondent from Brussels, but, as stated, the long-term exposure to pressure and threats left consequences for his health. He died in 2019 at the age of 57.
ANEM says that it is necessary to continue insisting on the complete elucidation of the case and the prosecution of those responsible, as well as on strengthening the institutional protection of journalists.
“This case remains a warning and a symbol of the need to ensure a safe environment for the work of journalists and that investigations of attacks on media workers are not left without an epilogue,” the statement said.
