The Serbian Parliament appointed lawyer Milan Antonijevic to the post of Commissioner for the Protection of Equality despite warnings from civil society organizations that they would not work with him.
Antonijevic was a human rights activists who headed YUKOM (Committee of Lawyers for Human Rights) for more than a decade. He spent 3 years as head of the Open Society Foundations and went on to head the Serbian government’s Council implementing its anti-discrimination action plan. He has been a independent consultant on human rights, European integration and rule of law since 2024.
Civil society organizations view Antonijevic as an apologist for the Vucic regime and have threatened to boycott the office of the commissioner if he is appointed.
Antonijevic takes over from Brankica Jankovic who held the post since 2015. He is the 3rd commissioner since the office was formed in 2010.
