UK Member of Parliament Alicia Kearns has voiced support for the “Protect Free Media” petition launched by the Serbian diaspora to defend outlets operating under United Media, including N1. Kearns said that media freedom in Serbia is “at a crossroads.”
Posting on X, Kearns commented on the growing pressure on journalists and outlets critical of the government, adding that the UK government should stand with them.
“Media freedom in Serbia is at a dangerous turning point. The UK government should be defending the right of Serbian journalists to speak truth to power as part of the Berlin process – and robustly challenging anyone who would undermine them”.
She also shared the link to the petition, launched by members of the Serbian diaspora under the slogan “Protect Free Media,” accompanied by the message: “No deals behind closed doors.”
Serbian citizens living in London, Washington, Brussels, San Francisco, and other cities highlighted the importance of free and independent media in Serbia.
“Imagine Serbia without N1, Nova S, Forbes Serbia, Danas, and Radar. Without them—who would ask the hard questions? Their future depends on the majority owner who makes the key decisions: BC Partners,” the diaspora said.
The petition follows the leak of an audio recording of a phone call between Telekom Srbija executive Vladimir Lucic and United Group director Stan Miller, in which they discussed weakening the media outlets operating under United Media in Serbia.
