Coalition for Media Freedom: Solidarity with Jelena Kleut – Suppression of Freedom of Expression and an Attack on the Education of Future Journalists

The Coalition for Media Freedom expresses its full support for Dr. Jelena Kleut, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Novi Sad, following the decision of the extended composition of the Senate to reject her appeal against the decision not to appoint her to the rank of Full Professor, which results in the termination of her employment at the Faculty.

We view this case as a dangerous precedent and a clear message that freedom of expression within the academic community is being suppressed, and that critical thinking and the public expression of views can be sanctioned through institutional mechanisms. Particularly troubling is the fact that the vote was held by secret ballot, which further deepens distrust in the procedure and creates an atmosphere of fear and irresponsibility, rather than transparency and the protection of academic autonomy.

However, the consequences of this decision do not affect only one professor. They directly affect generations of students, including future journalists and media professionals, who are being deprived of quality teaching, continuity in education, and mentorship. Professor Kleut notes that she has been working at the department for 18 years, teaches a large number of courses, and that “a large number of mentorships will be interrupted” due to the decision not to extend her employment. Jelena Kleut is a knowledgeable and principled professor who has for years invested her expertise and integrity in improving the media environment, turning academic expertise into a practical, socially beneficial force – in the service of the public interest, better journalism, and a better informed society.

We stand with Jelena Kleut and with all members of the academic community who defend the right to free speech, and we will provide her with all necessary support so that she can continue to selflessly share her knowledge with the students of the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. The University must remain a space of free thought and public dialogue, because when professors are silenced, knowledge is impoverished, and society is left without educated and free future journalists.
