The Constitutional Court of Serbia said Wednesday that, effective immediately, all communication between its President, Vladan Petrov, and the media will be conducted exclusively through the Office of the President of the Constitutional Court.
The Court cited the “complexity of the current situation” and the Court president’s need to “fully commit himself to the internal organization and regular operations of the Court” as the reasons for this decision.
“This measure will prevent any misinterpretation of the Constitutional Court president’s statements, distinguish his appearances as a legal expert and professor of constitutional law from his role as Court president and ensure the unhindered functioning of the Constitutional Court and the protection of its institutional reputation and authority,” the Court said in a press release.
The Judges’ Association of Serbia condemned comments made by Serbian Constitutional Court President Vladan Petrov during a January 28 appearance on the pro-regime Pink TV and published by the daily Politika on February 1, suggesting that sanctions should be imposed on judges who “publicly declare themselves as opponents of the current government.”
