CPJ concerned over attacks on Serbian journalists

The Committee to Protect Journalists expressed concern over attacks on Serbian journalists, calling the authorities to take those attacks seriously.

“CPJ is alarmed that KTV, Insider TV and N1 reporters were insulted, attacked, obstructed while covering a pro-government rally, as police failed to act. Authorities in Serbia must investigate the alleged inaction and ensure journalists’ safety,” an X post said.

The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) said on its portal that 3 journalists were attacked while reporting on a gathering in support of the ruling SNS party.

A separate X post said that the CPJ is concerned by reports that BIRN journalist Radmilo Markovic “received violent threats amid a smear campaign”. “Authorities in Serbia must take these threats seriously, investigate promptly, and ensure his safety,” it said.

The Council of Europe (CoE) Safety of Journalists Platform said that Markovic was threatened twice, on Facebook and by pro-regime Informer TV owner Dragan J. Vucicevic.
