The Democratic Party (DS) called Friday on judicial authorities to take immediate action against the ongoing attacks by regime officials on independent media, which have long taken on the characteristics of the criminal offense of endangering safety.
“We condemn the attempts to criminalize and intimidate the N1 newsroom, as well as the public targeting of journalist Danica Vucenic. These acts are further evidence of systemic pressure being exerted on free journalism in Serbia,” the DS said in a press release.
The party emphasized that the baseless accusations coming from the “highest levels of government,” specifically those claiming that journalists are undermining the constitutional order, serve a single purpose: to portray independent media as a security threat and journalists as legitimate targets.
“This kind of rhetoric is a well-known intimidation tactic that directly threatens journalists’ personal safety and the public’s right to be informed,” the DS said.
They expressed particular concern over the personalized nature of these smear campaigns, involving the selective pulling of statements out of context and twisting them into accusations of violence or extremism. The attack on Danica Vucenic illustrates how professional journalism is being discredited in order to create an atmosphere ripe for lynching.
