The Democratic Party (DS) on Friday wrote to European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, all parliamentary groups in the European Parliament (EP), and other European officials, raising alarms over fresh evidence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s efforts to subjugate independent media outlets under United Group through corruption and abuse of state resources, said DS leader Srdjan Milivojevic.
The letter particularly highlighted Vucic’s personal demand for the ousting of United Media chief executive Aleksandra Subotic, whose professional work has threatened his authoritarian grip, which has long overstepped constitutional boundaries.
“These shocking revelations lay bare the intense pressure faced by United Group employees and just how far the regime is willing to go to silence the last independent media outlets,” the party said.
The DS emphasized particular concern over allegations of corrupt dealings, hidden accounts, and monetary rewards promised for the shutdown of N1 and Nova S television stations.
“The Democratic Party calls on European Union institutions and member states to take urgent action to prevent the closure of Serbia’s last independent media. Their destruction would plunge the country into complete media darkness and mark another step for Serbia toward dictatorship,” it said.
