European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) President Maja Sever said that Serbian journalists are being attacked from all sides.
According to her, the pressure on Serbian journalists is incomparable and things are not working properly.
“When people in Europe hear what is happening to Serbian journalists, how armed men burst into their news desks or NGOs, searching premises for more than 20 hours, they are in shock and even the terrible numbers don’t give an idea of how frightening the pressure is every day,” she told the Cenzolovka portal.
“In Serbia, wherever you turn, the media freedom and journalists’ safety situation is not working: from open attacks, assaults, a hate campaign, impunity,” she said adding that the way Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addresses journalists is unbelievable.
Sever said that “unfortunately, there is no reaction” from the European Union except for the report by European Parliament Rapporteur Tonino Picula. “When we speak to European officials they mainly shrug. Europe is weak, weaker than when Croatia entered the European Union,” she said. Sever said the EU needs Vucic and they’re turning their heads from obvious violations of media freedom and human rights.
