European Union Ambassador Andreas von Beckerath told N1 on Friday that the EU expects Serbia’s top state officials to refrain from verbal assaults and threats against independent media.
He said that freedom of the media and independent journalism are the essence of every democratic society and added that the European Commission keeps saying that there has to be a good environment for the media. Von Becherath said the big challenge in Serbia is stopping state officials from making verbal assaults and threats against independent journalists. He said that journalists are being assaulted for reporting on the protests.
According to the EU Delegation chief, the Serbian authorities need to resolve the problem of political and economic pressure on independent media. He added that the measures to keep journalists safe have to be improved.
