The European Democratic Party said Friday that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is trying to make himself look good abroad, yet “Serbia’s reality keeps deteriorating.”
In a post on the X social media platform, the European Democrats pointed to the latest report from the NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which they described as unequivocal. According to the party, the report shows that during Vucic’s 12 years in power, the country has fallen from 54th to 106th place globally in terms of media freedom.
“This is not a detail—it is a warning sign. Media freedom is a cornerstone of democracy,” the European Democrats said.
“A candidate country cannot afford such a collapse. Full stop,” the post reads.
Serbia fell to 104th place out of 180 countries in this year’s World Press Freedom Index, released Thursday by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This represents a drop of eight places compared to the previous year.
The section of the report focused on Serbia notes that journalists covering the 2025 anti-government protests faced a record number of physical attacks – at least 100 – many of which were carried out by police officers.
