The European Democratic Party said that N1 journalists are facing threats and defamation, stressing that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is “fueling this toxic climate with his words.”

The European Democrats wrote a post on social media warning that “President Aleksandar Vucic claims to lead Serbia towards the European Union — yet under his watch, journalists at N1 face threats, defamation, and even horrific evocations of Charlie Hebdo.”

“Let’s be clear: Vucic fuels this toxic climate with his own words A regime that targets free media does not belong in the European family. As European Democrats, we stand firmly with those in Serbia and beyond who defend truth against authoritarianism,” they said.

The N1 editorial office received a threatening letter in the mail, “reminding” of the attack on the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, in which 12 employees were killed. The letter came from Post Office 11118, 89 Maksima Gorkog Street in Belgrade.

After the prosecutor’s office was contacted, the police and forensics arrived at N1 newsroom and took the letter. The threats to N1 were condemned by all journalist associations.
