German Greens MPs Anton Hofreiter and Boris Mijatovic said in Belgrade on Wednesday that respect for media freedom is a basic condition for European Union membership, adding that Serbia can’t sit on two chairs.

Hofreiter told reporters in parliament that they want the citizens of Serbia to have the opportunity of joining the EU because that will bring well-being, security and the fight against corruption. However, from what we have seen in the past few years, authorities destroying media freedom, that will not be possible, he said. He added that the German Bundestag and EU expect to see a government fighting corruption and guaranteeing freedom of the media.

According to him, Serbia has to show clearly which side it is standing on – freedom or Russian and Chinese dictatorship.

Mijatovic said that the harsh words often used by politicians about Serbia always have a purpose. “People in Germany know about the protests in Serbia.,, We have to be here for people, that is every politician’s job. Serbian MPs also have an obligation to control the government and work for the benefit of the citizens,” he said.
