IJAS: Journalists and media must not be targets of political score-settling or foreign disinformation

The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) firmly defends and stands with the journalists from Serbian media who have been subjected to dangerous and baseless claims made in a statement by the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation (SVR) regarding the alleged role of certain local and national media and the European Union in the ongoing protests.

Journalists from the media mentioned in Serbia report on the protests professionally, and it is their duty to provide the public with accurate and comprehensive information about events of public interest. However, statements like this— which, without evidence, insinuate foreign conspiracies— put journalists and media directly at risk. Following the SVR statement, colleagues have contacted IJAS expressing fear for their safety and feeling additional pressure in carrying out their work.

The spread of conspiracy theories and disinformation not only diverts attention from the real reasons why citizens take to the streets, but also undermines the public’s fundamental right to truthful and impartial information. Journalists are already exposed to attacks, threats and pressures, and such statements further hinder their work and create an atmosphere of insecurity and distrust.

IJAS calls on all domestic and foreign actors to refrain from disseminating politically motivated claims that endanger journalists and media. Our obligation remains clear: to protect journalists’ right to do their work freely and safely, as well as the public’s right to accurate and objective information.

Journalists must not become collateral damage in political score-settling. They are a pillar of a free and democratic society and must have the full support and protection of institutions and society as a whole.
