The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) strongly condemns the new threats directed at the authors of the show Dobar, loš, zao and columnists for the daily Danas, Marko Vidojković and Nenad Kulačin, as well as the threat sent to journalist and editor of the Glas Zaječara portal, Miljko Stojanović.
The latest threats against Vidojković and Kulačin were posted on Facebook on April 19, under a post sharing the program DLZ sa Vidojkovićem i Kulačinom, from an account named Branko Brano. In the messages, among other things, the authors of the show are threatened with a physical encounter and violence, alongside a series of brutal insults: “ok, ok, I f*** your mother and that one’s near you too… I hope I’ll find both of you, f*** both of you again. As far as I can see what you are doing to Serbia. BUT VIDOJKOVIĆ I HOPE I WILL RUN INTO YOU. and that HORSE with you too. and you, Vidojković, you’d better not run into me. And I would like to run into you. SCUMBAG,” as well as: “I’ve put on the gloves, I hope I’ll run into both of you, that is find you. f*** both of you again.”
Earlier, journalist and editor of the Glas Zaječara portal, Miljko Stojanović, received a threat via Facebook from an account belonging to Dušan Obradović, which read: “I f*** your mother. Who are you going to arrest, you’ll get a visit soon to repeat that, you’ve been registered.” This message is yet another in a series of serious attacks and acts of intimidation that Stojanović has been exposed to for years.
IJAS is particularly concerned by the fact that, in addition to threats on social media, Vidojković, Kulačin and Stojanović have for years also faced obstruction in their work, harassment, and physical attacks. During the past year, four cases related to attacks on Miljko Stojanović were opened in prosecutor’s offices, while in the same period three cases were opened in which Kulačin and Vidojković were the injured parties, and another five in connection with threats and attacks against Nenad Kulačin. Since 2019 until today, as many as 26 cases have been opened in prosecutor’s offices concerning threats against Marko Vidojković and Nenad Kulačin, of which only three resulted in convictions.
We remind the public that threats against journalists are not “comments,” nor an expression of political disagreement, but serious criminal offenses that directly endanger the safety of media workers and the public’s right to be informed. When institutions fail to respond in a timely and effective manner, this creates an atmosphere of impunity that further encourages new attacks.
These threats have been reported to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for High-Tech Crime, and we demand that the competent authorities urgently identify and prosecute those responsible, and provide adequate protection to the targeted journalists.
IJAS expresses full solidarity with Marko Vidojković, Nenad Kulačin and Miljko Stojanović, and states that it will continue to monitor the actions of institutions in these cases. The protection of journalists must be a priority, and every threat directed at media workers must receive a swift and clear institutional response.
