IJAS: The targeting of critical journalists must stop

The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia strongly condemns the targeting and death threats addressed to the journalist of the Nova.rs portal Pera Jovovic.

The journalist of Nova.rs became the target of the attack after the tabloid Informer wrote that Jovovic published the symbols of Kosovo on his private profile on Facebook. In the text published on the Informer portal, the journalist was targeted because he shared a location on his Facebook account that talks about where he is. Veselin Simonovic was also mentioned in it because he “liked” that announcement. After that, numerous insults and threats were made against the journalists, including threats of physical violence.

This is a continuation of numerous targeting and defamation campaigns of journalists aimed at creating a negative image of certain journalists and media as alleged enemies of the state.

We remind you that such incidents seriously endanger the safety of journalists and can cause very severe consequences, which IJAS has repeatedly warned about.

We ask the representatives of the authorities to condemn this behavior towards the journalist, and we expect the institutions to investigate all the circumstances of this event and the protection of the journalist.

IJAS,
