IJAS: Unknown man followed and threatened to kill Marko Dragoslavić – authorities must react urgently

The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) strongly condemns the harassment, stalking and death threats directed at photojournalist Marko Dragoslavić by an unknown man, and expresses serious concern for his safety. IJAS calls on the competent authorities to immediately take all legally prescribed measures to protect Dragoslavić and to identify and prosecute the perpetrator.

According to Marko Dragoslavić, the incident occurred last night in the Zvezdara municipality in Belgrade. While he was walking, he was approached by an unknown man who began shouting insults and profanities at him, following him closely. At one point, the man told him: “I’ll follow you all the way home.” Despite several warnings to step back and stop following him, the man did not stop and went on to issue a direct death threat: “You have no idea – I’m going to kill you!”

Dragoslavić managed to get away and immediately went to the Zvezdara Police Station, where he reported the stalking, intimidation and threats. An official note was taken. The journalist also managed to record the man who followed him on his mobile phone, which should enable the authorities to identify him quickly.

IJAS warns that threats against Marko Dragoslavić have been frequent and that there is a real risk they could escalate into physical violence. We remind the public that just a few days ago he was also threatened while trying to document alleged illegal construction, which further raises concerns that he may be facing targeted pressure due to his professional work in the field.

IJAS demands that the police and the competent prosecutor’s office identify the man seen in the video as soon as possible, secure all relevant evidence related to this case, and resolve it without delay. It is also necessary for institutions to act urgently in all previously reported cases of threats and pressure against Dragoslavić in order to prevent potential attacks.

IJAS underlines that stalking, intimidation and death threats against a journalist and photojournalist represent a serious threat to personal safety and an attack on media freedom and the public’s right to be informed. Every attack against journalists and media workers must be met with a swift, clear and effective institutional response, as failure to act encourages perpetrators and fuels a climate of impunity.

IJAS will inform relevant national and international organizations monitoring the safety of journalists about this case and will continue to insist on an urgent response by the competent authorities.
