The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) strongly condemns the continuous threats directed at journalist Nenad Kulačin and writer and journalist Marko Vidojković. The threats persist despite previous reports, as there have been no outcomes in these cases.
Kulačin and Vidojković have been repeatedly targeted with intimidation and threats. The latest two threats include the messages: “Antifa terrorists like you two deserve to be burned” and “F*** you, you won’t last much longer,” and a few days earlier they also received: “We should just take your head off, scum.” All threats have been reported to the competent authorities.
Particularly alarming is the fact that the threatening messages were sent from seemingly authentic Facebook profiles containing the full names, photographs, and location information of the individuals who issued the threats, indicating that they were made without any attempt to conceal identity. Such openness in issuing threats further underscores the seriousness of the situation and a sense of impunity, while the availability of this information should enable the authorities to quickly identify and appropriately sanction those responsible.
According to data from the IJAS database documenting attacks on journalists and media workers, 10 threats against Kulačin and Vidojković have been recorded this year, while more than 40 have been recorded since 2021. Only three of these cases have resulted in a final conviction, further confirming the worrying trend of impunity.
IJAS recalls that Marko Vidojković was previously relocated abroad due to serious security threats, with support from International PEN. In addition, Nenad Kulačin narrowly avoided a physical attack in Šabac in February this year, when an unknown person first insulted him, then approached and swung at him with the intent to strike.
IJAS calls on the competent authorities to act urgently on the reports, identify and sanction those issuing threats, and ensure effective protection for the journalists at risk. In the absence of a timely and decisive institutional response, perpetrators are effectively encouraged, and the public sphere becomes a place where it is only a matter of time before online and verbal violence escalates into physical attacks.
IJAS will continue to monitor this case and insist on institutional accountability, because journalists’ safety is not a private matter, but a basic prerequisite for media freedom and the public’s right to be informed.
