Serbia’s Information Minister Boris Bratina appeared on Informer TV on Wednesday where, among other things, he referred to journalists from N1 and Nova as “fools.” In a later statement to the daily Danas he claimed that his comment was just a joke.

“I don’t understand why you’re taking this so hard. It was meant to be funny, and there are fools everywhere. Also, don’t call me out on my choice of words, I said many other things that didn’t seem to bother you,” Bratina said.

During his appearance on pro-regime Informer TV, Bratina was seated in front of a backdrop that read “Occupation Media Platforms,” which was displayed alongside the logos of Danas, N1, Nova, and RTS (Serbian state TV). When asked if he found that problematic, he replied that he can’t go around choosing the backdrops at media outlets, though he added that he “has an opinion on it.”

While on the show, seated in front of the controversial backdrop, Bratina had said: “I’m sick and tired of answering these fools from Nova S and N1. When I talk about Serbs throughout history, they scream it’s a conspiracy. It’s not a conspiracy, these are facts. That’s the kind of nation we are—we must look to our history.”
