A meeting was held Monday at the Serbian Ministry of Information and Telecommunications on amendments to three pieces of media legislation — the Law on Public Information and Media, the Law on Electronic Media and the Law on Public Service Broadcasters.

The Ministry said in a press release that the meeting included members of a working group, journalism and media associations, representatives from interested stakeholders and expert communities, and international organization representatives.

Ministry officials presented all key innovations planned for the three laws, with special emphasis on changes to the Law on Public Service Broadcasters, the press release added.

Under the planned amendments to this law, for the first time, a provision will be introduced establishing an ombudsman for viewers, listeners, and readers, it said.

The Ministry noted that all amendments to the other two media laws were also presented, “created entirely in accordance with European Commission recommendations and Serbia’s Media Strategy.”

Representatives from journalism and media associations, and media experts shared their impressions of the proposed draft laws and offered recommendations for further improvements, the Ministry said.

It noted that, during six months of intensive discussions with the European Commission, all three draft laws have been fully harmonized.

The media laws are expected to be put in the parliamentary procedure “in the shortest possible timeframe.”

The Ministry recalled that the adoption of these laws is one of the most important conditions for the opening of Cluster 3 in Serbia’s accession negotiations with the European Union (EU).
