The Mapping Media Freedom portal included the August 10 death threat against an N1 TV crew on its list of incidents.
The portal which maps press and media freedom violations in Europe said that reporter Jelena Mirkovic and cameraman Denijal Dabic received a death threat while reporting on a night-time protest from a group of Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) supporters. One of the SNS supporters threatened to slit their throats while making a recognizable hand gesture across his neck, the incident report on the portal said. It said that N1 is routinely threatened with death for its independent reporting and added that the most recent instance was on 11 July, when the newsroom was threatened in an anonymous letter with a terrorist Charlie Hebdo attack.
“This throat-slit gesture during the protest represents another step of violence,” the portal said.
The European Federation of Journalists warned of the death threat made to the N1 TV crew.
A post on the Bsky social media network said that the crew were threatened with having their throats slit. It added that journalists from the Autonomija portal were warned that they will all be rewarded with two 9.2 mm bullets.
The Committee to Protect Journalists expressed concern over the harassment of the N1 TV crew covering the protest. “CPJ is concerned after pro-govt supporters harassed & obstructed an N1 TV crew covering a protest. The Serbian authorities must ensure journalists can report safely from demonstrations,” an X post said.
