A new wave of media harassment targeting judges Ksenija Maric and Aleksandar Perunovic and retired prosecutor Jasmina Paunovic, serves as a message to the justice system to remain silent, the Judicial Power Union stated on Monday.
In a press release, the Union argued that certain media outlets are not naming these officials for the sake of objective reporting, but in order to “label, discredit, and discipline” them.
“When judicial officers are attacked for their public stances, their professional integrity, or for making decisions that are not to the liking of those in power, the target is not just the individual. The target is everyone in our profession who might follow their example,” the Union said.
“For this reason, it is of vital importance for judges, prosecutors, legal assistants, and all judicial employees and professional associations to stand united in support of those who speak out to defend the justice system. We must collectively advocate for the preservation of at least the bare minimum conditions required for the rule of law,” the Judicial Power Union concluded.
