British MP Alicia Kearns expressed concern over the attacks on N1 outlets in the Western Balkans region.
“I am very concerned, understandably, and I think everyone should be, because media freedom is vital for a thriving democracy and to prevent a descent into autocracy,” she said, adding that it’s very concerning to see echoes of the 1990s.
“Unfortunately, the situation in Serbia is very concerning, and we need politicians across Europe, as we saw the European Parliament do recently, to speak out and express their concerns,” she added.
“We cannot have the president of an EU accession country negotiating with the majority owner to try and reduce the independence of the only really independent media left in Serbia,” Kearns said and added that it is vital the people of Serbia live in a free and open democracy, particularly if Serbia is looking to host its big event in 2027.
