N1 calls Orion Telekom to revoke decision

N1 called Orion Telekom to resume airing it programming in line with the existing contract after that cable provider removed N1 from its offer overnight on Wednesday.

“The decision by Orion Telekom to remove N1 television from its offer without any valid explanation represents one of the most drastic examples of censorship, aimed at eliminating all forms of media pluralism in Serbia,” an N1 press release said.

“N1 is one of the few television stations in Serbia that provides an alternative to the complete control of the television airwaves by the SNS regime, especially in recent months amid the largest protests Serbia has faced in its modern history,” it added.

“By removing N1 from its lineup, Orion Telekom has clearly demonstrated that it is part of the censorship mechanism being systematically implemented in the interest of the authorities and their attempt to keep the current ruling elite in power.

“What is particularly concerning is that N1 was removed despite a contract that is valid until March 2026, without any warning, negotiations, or justification that could warrant such a move. The unilateral cancellation of a channel that is watched daily precisely because it offers a view of Serbia that citizens cannot see on nationally broadcast channels is an act that can only be described as a politically motivated ban.

“There are no new circumstances that would justify that decision, despite the vague insinuations made in Orion Telekom’s statement. A legally binding contract cannot be terminated based on arbitrary “indications” or unnamed reasons—especially not without prior dialogue with the partner and without citing a clear and legitimate cause.

“Citizens should know that this is purely a politically motivated act directed against free journalism and the right to be informed. Through this action, Orion Telekom is directly violating the fundamental principles of freedom of speech, citizens’ right to information, and media pluralism. Removing critical voices from the media space is a hallmark of all authoritarian regimes—and unfortunately, we are witnessing the same in Serbia today.

“For all these reasons, N1 will take all available legal steps to protect its rights and interests, as well as the right of Serbian citizens to free and objective information. We will immediately inform all relevant domestic and international journalistic, regulatory, and European associations and institutions about this action by Orion Telekom, including those dedicated to protecting media freedom and democratic standards.

“We call on the leadership of Orion Telekom to urgently reconsider its decision and to stop participating in the organized suppression of media freedom in Serbia,” N1 said.
