The Board of the Human Rights House decided to award one of its annual recognitions for contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights in Serbia to the N1 newsroom. The N1 newsroom has reported impeccably, truthfully and in a timely manner, while being exposed to significant risks, the Human Rights House said.

“N1 has helped all of us so much and in a way protected us by exposing itself and its journalists to daily risk at the protests, reporting on truths that are painful for the authorities. The safety situation has been so questionable for N1, and the very question of its survival remains uncertain, in the hope that this won’t happen,” the organization said as it presented the award to our newsroom.

In its reasoning, the Board recognized N1 for its exceptionally professional, courageous, and sustained contribution to reporting on student and civic protests across Serbia, as well as on human rights violations and attacks against citizens and journalists.

Through consistent, responsible, and timely reporting, N1 has played a crucial role this year in upholding citizens’ rights to freedom of information and expression, despite the intense pressure and serious security risks the newsroom faced.

The newsroom’s perseverance, professionalism, and dedication to the public interest have provided people in Serbia with access to independent, verified, and relevant information, the Board of the Human Rights House said, noting that N1 stands as a shining example and a powerful champion of human rights values in our society.

This year’s awards also went to Serbian students, the Glas Zajecara news portal, and the informal group of judges and prosecutors organized under the banner “Let’s Defend Our Profession.”
