Lawyer and politician Aleksandar Olenik stated on the social media platform X that governmental control over the prosecution and police is insufficient if independent media continue to report on police brutality. He alleged that President Aleksandar Vucic’s plan is to shut down objective media outlets to facilitate further state action without public scrutiny.

“Control of the prosecution and the police is not enough if objective media report on batonings, arrests, tear gas, and sound cannons. Aleksandar Vucic’s plan is to extinguish objective media and hunt us down one by one in darkness and silence. After that, he goes to the elections with his own lists,” Olenik wrote.

In parallel, editors and management of United Media outlets have sent a letter to the majority owner, BC Partners, demanding an urgent meeting to clarify the company’s intentions.

They say there are indications that plans for media reorganization have intensified and are being developed in cooperation with the Serbian authorities.
