The only member of Serbia’s electronic media watchdog considered to be independent told N1 that she resigned from the body.
Judita Popovic said that she resigned from the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) because things had become meaningless. “Staying in a body that is lost in time and space and disregards the huge social turbulence and public dissatisfaction has become meaningless,” she said adding that her resignation in writing has been sent to parliament which appoints members of the REM Council.
Popovic said that she did everything in her power as one of the four REM Council members nominated by the opposition.
“I did everything I could to change things and now it’s enough. I am resigning in respect of the justified anger, grief and bitterness of the public which have been my dominant feelings over the past month. The protests give me hope that people won’t be satisfied with cosmetic changes. The key goal is to change the system of values imposed in the 1990s. All that violence being glorified since then has become a tool for unscrupulous politicians and media to keep our society captive,” she said.
